PreEnrollment / Registration Information FAQs

Can I enroll in GaVS if I am suspended or expelled from another school?

If a student is suspended or expelled from another school, GaVS administration must be notified prior to enrollment. Students are required to submit all discipline records to GaVS administration. Administration will review the records and issue approval or denial for enrollment.

Is there a cost?

Public school students: Local schools will pay tuition and fees for students enrolled in a GaVS course that is part of the student’s regular school day.

Private and homeschool students: An allotment of state-funded seats is available fall and spring semester on a first-come, first-serve basis. After the allotment has been reached, students are required to pay tuition and fees for all GaVS courses.

Out-of-state students: Students are required to pay all tuition and fees associated with their GaVS courses.

Can I graduate from Georgia Virtual School?

No, Georgia Virtual School does not graduate students. Georgia Virtual School is a program of the Georgia Department of Education and as such does not grant credit or award diplomas. GaVS does provide official documentation of the final grade earned for each completed course. Public and private schools transcribe their students’ GaVS course grades onto the official high school transcript. All students can view/print final grade reports directly from the student account.

What is the difference between A, B and AB?

GaVS courses labeled A are half unit courses that cover the first semester of course content while courses labeled B are half unit courses that cover the second semester of content. Students on a traditional schedule usually take courses in the half unit format.

AB courses are one full unit of credit that cover the full year (both semesters) of course content in one semester. Students on a block schedule typically take courses in the full unit format.

How much time is involved?

Students are expected to log in and participate in the online course on a daily basis Monday through Friday.

Fall/Spring semester: Time will vary by course, but students should plan to spend 5-8 hours per week for a half unit course (A or B) and 7-10 hours per week on a full unit (AB) course. The shorter the time a student is enrolled in a course, the greater the time commitment each week.

Summer semester: Time will vary by course, but students should plan to spend 15-25 hours per week for a half unit course (A or B) and 30-40 hours per week on a full unit (AB) course.

Please note that students may not be logged in to the course the entire time, but need to plan on the work taking that much time. Students may be able to complete some of the work offline but will need access to a computer and the internet daily Monday through Friday.

Will there be an orientation?

Once you are enrolled in a course and the term begins, you will complete a Getting Started Module within your GaVS course. It is found as the first module inside each GaVS course.

Will there be a teacher for my course?

Yes. All Georgia Virtual School courses are taught by highly qualified, Georgia-certified teachers.

Do I have to be online at a certain time of day?

All Georgia Virtual School courses have a synchronous component where the instructor is live teaching, answering questions, and/or reviewing in preparation for upcoming assignments. These synchronous sessions are not required for students, but they are highly beneficial, and attendance is encouraged.

If the synchronous session is held at a time not convenient to the student’s schedule, the session recording link will be posted within the course. The student can watch the session at a later date.
